Sony KDS-60A2000
price range: $1,499.99

The good: Can produce deep blacks with excellent shadow detail; can resolve every line of 1080 resolution sources; compact design with bottom-mounted speakers; incredible amounts of picture control; ample connectivity with dual 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs, three component-video inputs and a PC input.
The bad: Somewhat expensive; inaccurate primary colors; no picture-in-picture; disappointing VGA connection.
The bottom line: Although more costly than its DLP competition, the excellent picture quality of Sony's KDS-60A2000 will be worth the difference to most viewers.
Editors' note: When we first received our KDS-60A2000 review sample we noticed that it could not resolve any of the finest details in a 1080i test pattern. When we showed Sony's engineers the failed pattern, they promised to look into it. After issuing a vague preliminary statement that was originally printed here, the company followed up by admitting that some models in the field may indeed be incapable of resolving all of 1080i. Click here for details.
Sony also provided instructions that allowed us to modify the service menu to address the issue ourselves (we encourage owners who want to get the fix for their TVs to contact Sony directly). After the fix, our KDS-60A2000 passed the test pattern normally. Overall, we don't consider this issue a deal-breaker either way, since we found it impossible to discern prefix images from postfix with normal program material. See the Performance page of this review for more.
Series info: This review is of the 60-inch version, but our comments apply to every screen size in the series, namely, the 55-inch KDS-55A2000 and the 50-inch KDS-50A2000. Meanwhile the company also sells a step-up XBR2 series with different features, albeit very similar performance. See the KDS-R60XBR2 review for details.

Stunning Picture!

Summary: I have had the set for about a week and absolutely love it! I moved up from a 60 inch Zenith LCD projection and there is simply no comparison. The HD images are simply stunning. XBOX 360 looks fantastic through component video at 720p. I am not exatly a videophile, but I know what I like, and I like this set! There are quite a number of user controls, more than I know quite what to do with yet as I am still experimenting with it. There are probably enough controls for a sophisticated user to appreciate, but not so much that it is too daunting for the average user. I can't speak to how a 1080p image looks because i don't have a blue-ray play yet (sorry). I think a big concern for many people is how the set will handle Standard Definition (SD)images as most cable and satellite are still SD. I found that most of the SD channels were quite tolerable after tweaking some settings. Even my regular DVD's through the XBOX 360 look very very good. HD signals were eye popping to say the least. Not perfect, but nice job Sony!
Updated
I've spent some more time with the set and am still very happy with it. No green blobs found on previous versions of this set. The picture is very Bright (too bright on the "vivid" setting) and the off angle viewing is pretty damn good. Until the DVD wars settle down a bit I am using the very affordable Sony DVPNS75H upscaling HDMI DVD player. I was watching Charlie and the Chocalate Factory which is full 16:9 (no black bars) and the picture (for Standard DVD) was postively fantastic! If you want to see all the nits and picks I suggest you check out the AVS thread devoted to the set. The pro's may have some issues with the set, but the concensus among the regular Joe's is quite positive. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=701578Updated
I still love the set. Haven't seen any problems yet. My viewing distance is about 9 feet give or take. The screen is plenty bright even in a fairly well lit room. Am using the Sony DVPNS75H upscaling HDMI dvd player (very inexpensive). Watching Charlie and the Chocolate factory was fantastic! Eye popping colors, and great looking picture, even for SD DVDs. The off angle viewing is also quite good. Haven't noticed any color anomolies (green blobs on the previous model). If you want a complete list of nits and picks and have the ocular fortitude to scan through 65 pages of posts, you can go the avs forum on this model: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=701578 but remember, you were warned! The pros certainly have their issues with the sets and maybe it doesn't de-interlace 1080i the way they want or perhaps the test patterns on their calibration DVDs shows some glaring artifact or inability to properly stimulate their cybernetically engineered eyes, but the average Joe says "me likey picture."28 out of 28 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I started out looking at DLP and Plasma sets and was just so impressed by the picture I saw on the KDSR60XBR1 in my local stores. After doing some research on the Net, I was convinced Sony was on the right track with its SXRD system. And when I discovered that the KDS-60A2000 was available at a lower price, that was the clincher. I got the set 3 days ago and it is impressive. I have it in a room with 2 skylights and there is no issue at all with picture brightness or glare on the screen. When watching HD channels, the picture is just impressive. No smearing can be detected at all like I noticed on some DLP or plasma models. Watching baseball on this set makes you feel like your on the field with the players! Get an upscaling DVD player to take advantage of the set's 1080i capability when watching DVDs. No comparision between my old Sony progressive scan player ( which output at 480p) and my new Sony DVP-NS75H! It is very very close to watching an HD channel. Much, much better clarity and detail. And on some DVDs you will also get the added benefit of a larger picture. This happened with our DVD of Independence Day. You won't be disappointed with this set!

First of all, I would like to state that seeing this set in your home on your own feed (mine is TWC via a HD 8300 DVR) does not compare to seeing this bad boy in the store... it's SO much better. Unfortunately, you won't realize this unless you pony up the bucks.
My observations:
- This is not directed at any individuals in particular, but whoever thinks that the colors are not great on this set are CRAZY. The family stopped by today and EVERYBODY commented on how beautiful the colors on this set are
- I've had the set off and on a few different times today. Once or twice I did notice a green haze near the left center of the screen on startup but it was COMPLETELY gone by the time the lamp was at full brightness. This does not worry me now; if it gets worse, I'll call Abt or Sony.
- The black levels are among the best I have seen! I'm sure I could improve my blacks even more, but I love a bright picture so the black levels are ever so slightly lighter
- Depending on how you set this TV up, it can be VERY bright. In short, brightness is not an issue with this set.
- The remote does feel more flimsy that the XBR1's, but I think it is a lot easier to find buttons by feel
- I'm sitting at about 12-13 feet away from the screen and the 60" is perfect
- As stated before, SD is not terrible, and it's not great... it's fine. Remember SD televisions can't do HD, and HD televisions are not the best at SD. I bought this set for HD performance folks!
- With a good feed, the image on this set almost looks 3-D
- The speakers in "surround" mode sound great; they can be very immersive if you crank them up (and they are not "Dumbo" ears )
- My set sits on top of a 25" credenza (JSP Industries "Bolero") and there is no brightness dropoff at all
- No fan noise unless the TV is off and it is still cooling down
- No dead or lit pixels; no smudges on the screen
Some obsessive / compulsive tiny issues I noticed:
- As I posted earlier today, I noticed that when the screen is off, the center of the screen is lighter than the left and right sides; I was told that this is normal
- The black plastic rim around the screen has a spot where the plastic isn't uniform; it's color is slightly off. It's not really noticeable though.
- The geometry of the center bottom of the screen might have a slight dip; again, it's not noticeable unless you REALLY look for it
- When Abt delivered my set, I noticed that the box was on it's side. I don't see any issues with the box or the set, so I'm not going to worry about it.
I agree with CNET's "excellent" rating; this one was worth the wait!17 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: In my opinion SONY is trying to lock-in the PS3 as the primary HIGH VIDEO quality gaming input on this TV. In the manual it states that you should not connect your PC via HDMI, and then it limits the RGB to WXGA 1280x768. I know for a fact that the new Mits displays have a DVI connection for your PC that allows for 1920x1080. Great TV for viewing HD from traditional sources or your Blu-RAY Player though.
Updated
The difference with the XBR and this TV is that the XBR2 will have DRCv2.5 vs DRCv1 on this TV. How it will affect the quality on this TV remains to be seen....
They should have used DRCv2 from last years XBR1Updated
I am not blown away by it like I was with the XBR1 PQ. I noticed a washed out look, I wonder if its the DRCv1 it uses? Grayscales are off, red and green push out of the box, needs extensive calibration. I also noticed that the motion artifacts and video noise are more so than the XBR1. I am going to get a ISF calibration to see if it resolves the issues with the PQ. FYI- The HDMI input work fine with a PC just need to underscan but you will get a better resolution that the VGA input which is limited to 1360x768.Updated
After reporting that the PQ was subpar at best, I had my ISF trained tech come out and this is what he did to make it dramatically better and just as good if not better than the XBR1's
HDMI settings using a Directv HD receiver
1- Set the Color Matrix to Custom and all resolutions to either ITU601 or ITU709 mine are ITU601. (MY ISF guy found inaccurate color with the automatic setting)
2- Set Cinemotion to Auto it helped to clear up the 480I signals a whole lot.
3- Turn OFF all enhancements(CNET recommends this for the XBR1 as well)
4-Go to a 480i signal and change the DRC palette to High Density and MAX for both reality and clarity(top right corner of box)
5- Use power saving mode=on it enhances the blacks without the extra noise from the other options.
These are my Picture settings after ISF (mind you he did go into the service menu)
Picture mode= Custom
Advanced Iris= Auto 1
Picture= 80
Brightness= 56
Color= 57
Hue=0
Color Temp=Neutral (ISF Tech found it to be the closest to 6500K)
Sharpness= 50
White Balance settings=
r-Gain=-11
g-gain=-13
b-Gain=0
r-bias=4
g-bias=3
b-bias= 2
All I can say is that WOW,,,I am watching Kingdom of Heaven on HBOHD and I can see the blood spurting out of the horses and the knights with such clarity and 3d effect that I am BLOWN AWAY........finally.....
Forget DRCv2.5 on the XBR2 you only really need it for 480i sources which the A2000 has that ability,,,buy the XBR2 because you want an extra HDMI port or because you like the DUMBO EARS....Updated

Best T.V. I've ever seen. All resolutions are amazing and the contrast is superb.
by Kwiq Niss on August 22, 2006
Pros: Size, weight, appearance, resolution, contrast, brightness, color, sound, inputs, stand availability, viewing modes, user friendly, many options, DRC for 480i signals, all things TV should be!
Cons: Can't hang on wall, no casters on stand however sliders work great, when used in an entertainment center without casters/sliders the rear inputs are not very accessible, however this is an easy fix.
Summary: This T.V. is everything a new T.V. should be. I've viewed it in bright and dark rooms and in any case the contrast is amazing. The viewing ...
Summary: This T.V. is everything a new T.V. should be. I've viewed it in bright and dark rooms and in any case the contrast is amazing. The viewing angle is very wide; if you can see the screen, you can see the picture. All resolutions are amazing. I watch HDTV and regular 480i signal on it, DVD's through my XBOX 360 and play a wide variety of games on it and in all cases the performance is perfect. I had a LAN party and fragged all my friends and heard comments like, "How did you see me?"
I can't speak enough about the picture because it is better than all of the competitors. I looked at them all and none compared. For the perfect picture you do need to play with the settings a bit. I leave my power saver off and the picture mode on custom. The contrast is on Auto 1. The DRC is set to max for the 480i signals.
The picture is on max and the brightness and color on 55. the color temp. is neutral and sharppness on max. Black corrector is high. Gamma:max, clear white: high, live color: high; detail enhancer: max; edge enhancer: high.
So there isn't much more I can say about the picture. There isn't one better. The stand that goes with it is nice however it lacks casters or sliders, but a cheap set of angle cut sliders at Wal-Mart works well on carpet. If the T.V. is in an entertainment center the rear inputs are difficult to access and the power cable is short. But the T.V. is light and easy to maneuver, even when strapped to the stand.
My overall opinion of the T.V. is that it is perfect. My only complaint is with the base stand and I see why they didn't slap casters on it. Not everybody wants them, but if the do it is easy enough to put them on. I have no complaints against the T.V. itself. There are plenty of inputs and options, which are user friendly. The massive size is misleading when considering the light weight of the unit. It looks great in my entertainment center and is very stylish (if this is superficial, sue me. This matters to some consumers; in other words it's wife friendly too). If you are considering this purchase, then go for it. If you have an xbox or 360 and xbox live, then get the diamond card and find out what discounts you get at the local stores. I got mine for $2640 the day it came out in Charlotte. Even at the full price of $3699 it is an amazing deal. There is nothing like this T.V. Especially if you have seen Mitsubishi's 1080p or any of the competitor's. Side by Side, you will see the difference and Sony will win.Updated
I read up a little more and adjusted my settings and got better color reproduction with different settings. First I went into advanced settings and turned off all of the enhancements.
Here are the new settings.
Advanced Iris: Auto 1
Picture: 80-Max (I used max)
Brightness: 57

Summary: I have had this HDTV for 2 days now and what can I say but, simple amazing!! I have been searching for a HDTV for the last 6 months. I looked at every HDTV out there: Hitachi, Toshiba, Panasonic and nothing compares to the SXRD technology of the Sony. The screen is so clear at the 1080p programming. I really like Sony's Advanced Iris, which give the best black and dynamic contrast I have seen on a HDTV set. It is expensive, but if you want the best, go for this set.
I would recommend an upconverting DVD player connected via HDMI. I watched the Matrix last night and I saw details I had never seen before. It was like watching a completely new movie. I am ready to watch most of my movies over again. The only reason I did not give it a 10 was because of the price. I strongly recommend it!9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Incrediable value and picture quality!

Pros: Amazing HD picture quality, 1080p via HDMI, great video-noise reduction, offers abizzillion picture tweaks, nice design change from XBR1

Summary: When it comes to HD picture quality this is pretty much the best it gets. I have yet to see another TV, in this price range, that beats it in picture quality. While the latest 1080p Samsung comes close, its video noise, possible rainbows, and its inaccurate colors of red make the Sony supieror in my opinion.
The A2000 offers way more custimization with its picture controls then the competion. Its pretty overwhelming actually.
The 1080p HDMI inputs are a nice addition. When comparing the A2000 to the XBR1 in the SonyStyle store on the Sony Bluray player, the A2000 seemed a little bit clearer. It was most noticable on the menu screen, with the white lines. It wasnt a huge difference from the XBR1, but it was better. Nontheless The 1080p signle support will go nicely with my PS3.
My only complaint is the lack of picture in picture. Seemed like a big feature to miss out on, but you can still get the feature from an extrenal tuners like a cable box.
The SD quality seems like it could of been a little better. When compared to other TV's they seemed to smooth out the edges a little bit better and make them less jaggie. There was still plenty of detail with SD. and the Noise reduction settings help SD look a lot better. This isnt a big issue for me, as I dont watch much SD, but for some it might. The SD quality is still good and its certiantly watchable.
If your looking for a big screen TV in the 50-60 range, awesome picture quality, and something that isnt to expensive, then you cant go wrong with this set.7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Stop Reading and Start Buying
by Beer-Gut on January 3, 2007
Pros: Excellent Hi-Def Picture, Incredible Color, Great Value
Cons: Standard Def is good, but not like a tube TV.

Summary: If you are like me, this is probably the umpteenth post you have read about this TV and you are still on the fence. Because if you are like me, you want the biggest TV your budget will allow but you want the best quality picture as well... And you just can't get a 'Wall TV' this size with this picture quality for anywhere near this price. I was tossed between this and the 58" Panasonic Plasma. I got a chance to play with the Panny at a friend's house and I will say that the picture quality was not noticeably better, so I couldn't see spending more for a smaller TV, just to put it on the wall.
So to all the fence-riders - stop reading and make the plunge. You will be happy you finally did.
I recommend that you not base your decision by viewing this set in a Discount electronics store. Go to a Sony dealer showroom or an actual Sony Store and you will get to see this set perform at its best. Then go buy it wherever you want. I finally got mine from a showroom in NYC - Capital Audio. They price matched all 'real' offers and were extremely helpful, and were worth the 3 hours of traffic around the holidays.
PROS - I love the HD quality of this set - no complaints at all. Plenty of connections and customizations in the control panel. Even the settings out of the box are great.
Absolutely awesome picture from MY Sony DVP-CX995V with HDMI output. HD digital Cable channels are also incredible via HDMI output.
Picture from My old Philips DVP642 is very sharp via Component Video. DIVX and XVID on same Philips Player are very good but not perfect.
Remember, if you are viewing lower quality images and movies, the shortcomings are only magnified on a bigger, sharper TV.
XBOX 360 looks great. Madden 2007 on this TV makes you feel like you are part of the game. And the dead or Alive Girls really look ALIVE in HD on this TV. I feel like I should Ice my wounds after a round of Fighting or Football.
CONS? - The sound is perfectly passable for normal TV viewing and kids movies. If you are buying a TV like this, I can only assume you have a real theater system for sound and you will be lowering the TV Volume and cranking up the AMP when you watch a movie anyway. So to me the TV sound is not an issue, and for TV speakers, I'd say they are way above average.
Standard Def TV is very good. The problem is that HDTV's aren't meant for Standard Def, and if you stretch the picture, it seems that you notice more of the imperfections. I followed the instruction found here about turning off DRC and played with some other settings and it improved Standard Def viewing immensely. But make sure to turn back on DRC for HD Viewing.
I also watch my movies in a very dark room, and I recommend using the settings listed on this review if you do the same. This is an Incredible TV.
My wife who complained at that thought of upgrading our 50" Hitachi 4:3 projection set, is still speechless when this thing gets turned on.
And Yes - I would buy this set again. My only regret is that I waited as long as I did. Don't make my mistake - buy this set now!5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I traded in my XBR1 for this TV. This TV does it all in a smaller foot print. For a 60 inch TV you really need a real stereo for sound. Looking at this compared to the xbr1 excluding the ears and the green blob it still wins. It still has many menu options for the picture quality as well as other items below...
No Cable Card....Who cares old version on other tv and most of the time if you have cable like me you will want to use the I-control function or DVR and it doesnt work with this.
No Dumbo ears...who cares
No card reader--- That thing was hard to get to anyway when paired with the stand. had to get in there and fumble to get the stick out etc. Waste of space just buy a dvd player with it in the front.
This TV has the ability to hook up your XBOX 360 in HD to the front unlike the xbr1 which only had s-video.
This TV has full 1080p input and doesnt down grade 1080i then have to upscale it to 1080p.
Alot cheaper you can get some nice stuff with 1000.
Well that is enough for now good luck with your purchase.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have been waiting for the price of plasma TV?s to come down then Sony shows up with the SXRD. In my opinion the Sony SXRD TV?s simply blow away the competition.
The KDS-R60XBR1 was too wide for my viewing wall with the speaker on the side so when I spotted the KDS-60A2000 on Sony?s web site it was all over, I couldn?t even wait for it to hit the stores. There are more than enough audio and video inputs, which can be titled or even hidden so that you only have to scan through the inputs you are actually using, ?very nice feature?. I was afraid the small speakers on the bottom would be lacking but it sounds good too when being used as a stand alone TV, however most of the time the sound will be coming from the home theater receiver.
If this TV where just a little less expensive I would give it a perfect ?10? but I don?t regret the purchase. I definitely recommend the KDS-60A2000.Updated
